"I used to be prone to internalising my thoughts and feelings and only sharing my conclusions. This left people in the dark as to what (and if!) I was thinking. Now I’m much more likely to share my thoughts and feelings and am thus seen to be part of the debate rather than just providing the solution."

Climbing down the ladder

In my daily work, I meet men and women who have worked, pushed, cajoled, struggled and persevered, to fight their way to the very top of the ladder. Only to find that life at the top of a ladder is indeed lonely, and cold, and surrounded by emptiness.

Compare this with life on the open ground. There are no handrails to tell you where you need to go. But the landscape is wide, varied, fertile and open to discovery. What’s more, there is room for others to join you. You can travel with a companion - even your whole team - at your side. As my friend Jagdish Parikh says when fellow-passengers try to fight their way off an airplane: "Don’t worry, there’s space for all of us out there!" When you exchange a ladder for a landscape, there is room for us all. You are invited to endless exploration... and faced with choices you may have been avoiding.

What would it mean for you, to approach your work as an inner-directed journey of discovery? What new questions would it raise? What fresh adventures would life hold for you? How would it feel to take life one step at a time, tracking your bliss like an animal stalking its prey? If you apply these metaphors to your life, what will you do differently today?

"The journey of a thousand miles starts beneath your feet". Begin.
